We are rising seniors participating in the Girls Who Code 2020 Summer Imersion Program. In the Caribbean, the diversity in swimming is great, however, that is not the case in the remainder of the world. As part of our Activist Toolkit Project, we decided to focus on diversity in acquatics. As black swimmers ourselves, we knew we had to use our experiences and observations to spread awarness of our cause. We hope that this website will persuade you to join and share our cause!
1. In a recent study done by USA Swimming, it was found that 64% of black children, 45% of Latino children and 40% of white children said they had little to no experience in swimming.
2. A swim lesson can cost around $50+ per person and for most, that is a price that may not be affordable.
3.The cultural scaring blacks faced when the first public pools opened was so significant that we can see its effects today.
4. The Rio 2016 Olympics was the FIRST time a black woman, Simone Manuel, made a gold medal, an accomplishment not only to the US but to the world.
