When I started at my new swim team, I felt uncomfortable because I clearly stood out as a tall black girl who did not whear the team attire. I did not see a another plack person in site and it made me uneasy. Not to mention, the swimmers would put me to the back of the lane despite me touching their feet.
There was a time when I had to train with the group above mine and a white teamate told me I couldn't go in her lane because it was filed. Lo and behold, when her white friend came late to the practice and joined the lane, there was no objection.
Our coach sat us down to introduce new members of the team and when and when she revealed that my sister and I swim for Guyana, a girl said "a country unknown". She later apologized with the lie that she considered us close friends.
